Please check to it you have the necessary drivers that are required to connect your phone to a PC and also download the System tool provided for the phone from your manufactures and then ensure that android debugging is enabled in settings->applications->development and then connect your phone to the PC and check if you have any problems.

for sync your android phone with your laptop you have to download a sync software which is
available on your mobile companies website
example if you have the HTC cellphone then you have to download the HTC SYNC software from
the htc website www.htc.com in your Computer ...
then there will be no error regarding sync of your phone with laptop ....
