Insufficient storage available error message on HTC Desire Android handset

I could see ample free memory while checking the remaining memory status on my HTC Desire Android handset. But I couldn’t store any data on the device due to ‘insufficient storage available’ error message. How can I solve this?

Re: Insufficient storage available error message on HTC Desire Android handset

    Hello Friend.....

Reply : Insufficient storage available error message on HTC Desire Android handset

Apparently this message prevents installation/update of apps when less then 10% of the internal memory is available.

This used to be 14MB with the HTC Desire (it had 140 MB free out of the box) and it seems to be 200MB with our 2GB devices.

I was constantly getting this message, when I started to poke around, what used up all the memory, with most of my apps already moved to SD card: Solid Explorer can display folder sizes: looking at /data/data I found apps such as Chrome, Gmail, Youtube, the built in browser, Flipboard having data folders in the magnitude of 100MB.

In most cases it's the cache subfolder which holds most of this data, and this can be safely erased.

In my case the biggest memory hog was the cache folder of Instagram, 261 megabytes!!!

The good news is, that you don't even need to be rooted, you can simply and without any ill effects erase the cache from under "Manage Apps".

Doing so gained over 500MB in my case, and I don't get the ominous message any more.

    I hope this helps.....
