What has to be done for disabling background running apps on Android Ice Cream Sandwich?

My android handset is currently running on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. When I use that handset, I can find several apps are running in the background even if I quit them. The battery charge in my handset is reducing quickly due to this. What are the procedures required to disable these apps?

First of all, get into the settings from the home screen. You can also choose settings from the notification bar after dragging it to the bottom part. After getting into the settings, tap ‘Apps’ option from the list displayed on the screen. On doing so, three tabs will pop up on the screen from which hit the ‘All’ tab. Then, you can find the list of all applications installed into your device. Go through that list and hit the app you want to stop. This will bring up the details of that app on the screen. Press the ‘Disable’ button afterwards and hit the ‘OK’ button available in the warning message. The disabled app will not show up in the apps list or app drawer.

You can easily disable those apps which have been running redundantly.Go to "Settings" from home screen of your device then tap to open after that will see an option as "Applications".You have to open the options then hit on "Manage Applications".Under that above few options appear you have to tap on "ALL".Once open will see all the installed & pre-installed apps, you have to hit on that app which you want to stop.Once done a pop up will appear, hit on "Disable" then on "OK" to confirm the action.Once done then app will not be shown up in the app list.
