That totally depends on Google when they develop and release newer version of the Android OS sometimes it may be a year and sometimes it may even be earlier. The High end devices supports the newer versions for more than 3 to 4 years if there are not much development with OS on the platform for the support of Hardware if there is a lot of improvement then the Hardware might be limited to devices that are old.

There is no such fixed time period

The only reason till it supports the New device is when one will release the New version for the new devices.

So keep on upgrading your phone on regular basis.

For upgrading you can follow the steps :

Settings >> About Phone >> Software updates >> Check Now

Versions can last for many years. After release they remain in the market for long. Comapnies can decide whether to continue with the current version or not. So if they discontinue the version, then you may not get any update for your phone if you get any trouble. You can continue using the same version, but then don expect company to help you if device needs update and they have discontinued that version

    Hey

Well its a difficult question to ask because the rate at which android is developing it wont be too long before something just vanishes and a new one comes up.

A perfect example will be now android ics has just 6% of the market now and we have jelly bean comming up.

So it will be wise to root your phone that can be the only way to enjoy new os on your current phone.

    Thanks
